UCC Sandwich Programmes for Secondary Education

The University of Cape Coast (UCC) in Ghana offers various courses within its five-semester Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) sandwich programmes, focused on secondary education. This programme was developed in collaboration with the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) through the Institute of Education.

This is a 5-semester undergraduate education programme designed for basic schoolteachers who aim to teach at the Senior High School (SHS) level. It provides the necessary training and qualifications for teachers seeking to advance to SHS.

The programme spans five long vacations, with six weeks of engagement during each vacation period.

Courses Offered in the Secondary Education Programme:

UCC offers the following Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) courses in secondary education:

  • B.Ed. (Mathematics)
  • B.Ed. (Science)
  • B.Ed. (Arts)
  • B.Ed. (Social Studies)
  • B.Ed. (Social Science)
  • B.Ed. (Home Economics)
  • B.Ed. (Management)
  • B.Ed. (Accounting)
  • B.Ed. (Information Technology)

Admission Requirements for the Secondary Education Programme:

To qualify for admission, applicants must hold a Diploma in Basic Education (DBE) and have a Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSSCE) or West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) qualification. Applicants must obtain and pass the Diploma in Basic Education (DBE) from an accredited institution, both in Ghana and internationally. Additionally, candidates must have credit passes in at least two subjects from the WASSCE/SSSCE, relevant to the selected course or electives.

Specific Requirements for the Various Courses:

  1. Bachelor of Education (Mathematics): Applicants should have a Diploma in Basic Education (Science and Mathematics Option) with Credit in Elective Mathematics and one of the following: Chemistry, Physics, or Economics from the SSSCE/WASSCE.
  2. Bachelor of Education (Science): Applicants must hold a Diploma in Basic Education (Science and Mathematics Option) with Credit in any two of the following: Chemistry, Physics, Elective Mathematics, or Biology from the SSSCE/WASSCE.
  3. Bachelor of Education (Arts): Applicants need a Diploma in Basic Education with Credit in any two of the following subjects: Christian/Islamic Religious Studies, History, Literature in English, French, or Ghanaian Language from the WASSCE/SSSCE.
  4. Bachelor of Education (Social Sciences): Applicants must possess a Diploma in Basic Education with Credit in any two of the following subjects: Economics, Geography, or Elective Mathematics from the SSSCE/WASSCE.
  5. Bachelor of Education (Social Studies): Applicants should have a Diploma in Basic Education with Credit in Geography and one of the following subjects: Economics, History, or Government from the SSSCE/WASSCE.
  6. Bachelor of Education (Home Economics): Applicants must have a Diploma in Basic Education with Credit in two of the following subjects: Food and Nutrition, Management in Living, General Knowledge in Arts, Biology, Clothing and Textile, or Chemistry from the WASSCE/SSSCE.
  7. Bachelor of Education (Management): Applicants should have a Diploma in Basic Education with Credit in Business Management and any two of the following subjects: Accounting, Economics, Elective Mathematics, or Costing from the SSSCE/WASSCE.
  8. Bachelor of Education (Accounting): Applicants must have a Diploma in Basic Education with Credit in Accounting and two of the following subjects: Business Management, Costing, Economics, or Elective Mathematics from the SSSCE/WASSCE.
  9. Bachelor of Education (Information Technology): Applicants seeking admission must have a Diploma in Basic Education with Credit in any two of the following subjects: Economics, Business Management, Accounting, or Elective Mathematics from the SSSCE/WASSCE.

Note:


The UCC Sandwich Programme for Secondary Education is specifically designed for basic schoolteachers who wish to transition to teaching at the Senior High School level. Therefore, applicants without a Diploma in Basic Education (DBE) or those who have not passed the DBE will not be eligible for admission.
